Trump administration ‘working on’ 50-year mortgage to boost housing affordability
At the start of the weekend, Trump continued his focus on housing affordability. On Saturday, he shared a graphic teasing a potential 50-year mortgage term. The image, titled “Great American Presidents,” features former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Trump side by side, labeled “30-Year Mortgage” and “50-Year Mortgage,” respectively.
Following this, Pulte confirmed that the administration is actively “working on” introducing a 50-year mortgage term aimed at boosting housing affordability. He described this initiative as a “complete game changer.”
Trump’s reference to Roosevelt aligns with his push for longer mortgage terms. The 32nd president’s New Deal legislation created several agencies, including the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), which provided relief during the Great Depression by enabling longer mortgage terms. However, the 30-year mortgage term itself wasn’t authorized by Congress until the late 1940s, several years after Roosevelt’s death in office.
