UK seeks Danish inspiration to shake up immigration system

**Ia Shabana Mahmood to Model New UK Migration Measures on Danish System**

Ia Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, is set to introduce a series of new migration measures, with plans to model some policies on Denmark’s approach, widely regarded as one of the toughest in Europe.

Officials have reportedly studied Denmark’s stricter rules, particularly its tighter policies on family reunification and the restriction of most refugees to temporary stays. Mahmood’s main objective is to reduce incentives that draw migrants to the UK, while streamlining the process for the removal of individuals who have no legal right to remain in the country.

However, the proposed measures have sparked debate within the Labour Party. Some members oppose a Danish-style approach, with one left-wing Labour MP commenting that it is too “hardcore” and echoes policies associated with the far right.

**Recent Channel Crossings Spike**

The news follows the Home Office’s latest figures, which show that an additional 1,269 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats on Thursday and Friday. The uptick comes after a two-week period of bad weather, during which there were no recorded crossings.

At the Labour Party conference in September, Mahmood committed to “do whatever it takes” to regain control of Britain’s borders.

**Studying the Danish Model**

Mahmood has reportedly been impressed by Denmark’s success in reducing successful asylum claims to a 40-year low—excluding the pandemic year of 2020. Last month, she dispatched senior Home Office officials to Copenhagen to study Denmark’s migration policies firsthand and assess how similar lessons could be applied in the UK.

In Denmark, refugees who are specifically targeted by a foreign regime are given protection. However, most asylum seekers fleeing conflicts are granted only temporary residence. Once the Danish government determines that the situation in a refugee’s home country is safe, those individuals may be required to return.
