MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – A Miami Gardens elementary school is set for a major transformation. Miami-Dade officials gathered at Dr. Frederica Wilson/Skyway Elementary School on Friday to celebrate a groundbreaking ceremony for a significant upgrade and renovation project.

The $34.1 million investment will provide 400 student stations and introduce state-of-the-art facilities, including modern art and music labs, as well as enhanced science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs.

Superintendent Jose Dotres praised Dr. Frederica Wilson, the former principal of the school who is now a U.S. congresswoman, for her vital role in making the project possible. “I have to personally say, you see her? She’s always so graceful, but let me tell you, her level of persistence to get what’s right for children and do what’s right for the community is always her centerpiece,” he remarked.

This project also marks a milestone as the district’s first Net Zero school. The upgraded campus will feature new solar panels and water-conserving fixtures, emphasizing sustainability and energy efficiency.

The renovation promises to create a modern, eco-friendly learning environment designed to support the needs of students and the broader community for years to come.
