INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Bam Adebayo delivered a stellar performance with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Norman Powell contributed 21 points in his return to Southern California, helping the Miami Heat hold off the Los Angeles Clippers 120-119 on Monday night.
Andrew Wiggins added 17 points and Kel’el Ware chipped in 16 as the Heat snapped a two-game losing streak and notched their second road win in five games. Miami now stands 1-2 to start a four-game road trip.
For the Clippers, James Harden led the charge with 29 points and Kawhi Leonard added 27. Despite their efforts, Los Angeles suffered their first home loss in four games this season. Ivica Zubac posted nine points and 12 rebounds, while Derrick Jones Jr., Bradley Beal, and John Collins each scored 12 points.
Miami was efficient from the floor, shooting 54.2%, and drained 12 of 25 from beyond the arc. The Clippers finished with a solid 50% three-point shooting clip, going 17 of 41. However, turnovers plagued Los Angeles—they committed 21 giveaways, which Miami converted into 37 points.
The game’s closing moments were intense. Miami extended their lead to 120-116 following two free throws by Adebayo with 56 seconds left. After Adebayo missed a close-range attempt with 26 seconds remaining, Harden responded with a clutch three-pointer 20 seconds later, narrowing the margin to one point.
The Clippers had a chance to clinch the victory, but Leonard’s 26-foot step-back three-pointer at the buzzer missed its mark.
Los Angeles faced a deficit as large as 13 points in the third quarter before rallying to tie the game at 105-105 with 9:55 remaining, courtesy of a timely three-pointer from veteran Chris Paul.
