**Pope Leo Calls for Immediate Ceasefire and Humanitarian Corridors in Sudan**

VATICAN CITY — On Sunday, Pope Leo issued a heartfelt appeal for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in Sudan. Speaking during his weekly Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square, the pope expressed his deep sorrow over reports of severe brutality in the city of Al-Fashir, located in the Darfur region.

“Indiscriminate violence against women and children, attacks on defenseless civilians, and serious obstacles to humanitarian action are causing unacceptable suffering,” Pope Leo stated. He called on the international community to respond “decisively and generously” to support relief efforts amid the ongoing crisis.

According to the United Nations human rights office, hundreds of civilians and unarmed fighters may have been killed late last month when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces captured Al-Fashir. This city was the Sudanese army’s last major stronghold in Darfur. The city fell after an 18-month siege about a week ago, leading tens of thousands of residents to flee.

In addition to addressing the situation in Sudan, Pope Leo also spoke about recent events in Tanzania. He noted clashes following national elections, which resulted in numerous casualties. The pope urged all parties involved to avoid violence and to pursue peaceful dialogue.
