Dolphins Bring Back Rookie Cornerback Amid Injury Issues Before ‘TNF’

The Miami Dolphins are bringing back a familiar face to bolster their secondary, signing cornerback Ethan Robinson to the practice squad on Tuesday.

Robinson, an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota, originally spent the offseason program and training camp with the Dolphins before being released in August. His return comes amid a busy day of roster moves for Miami, which also placed cornerback Storm Duck on season-ending injured reserve and moved cornerback Kendall Sheffield to the practice squad/injured list.

At 22 years old, Robinson has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game. He was waived during final cuts but impressed during the preseason, showcasing his potential in the Dolphins’ defensive system under coordinator Anthony Weaver. Standing 6-foot tall and weighing 195 pounds, Robinson played one season at Minnesota, where he recorded three interceptions in 13 games. Prior to that, he spent three years at Bucknell, earning All-Patriot League honors.

One of Robinson’s standout moments came in the preseason when he made a game-sealing interception in a 24-17 victory over the Detroit Lions. Reflecting on the play, he told Miami’s WTVJ-Channel 4, “I just tried to make a play. Got my blitz timing right, saw the angle of the quarterback’s arm.”

The Dolphins’ secondary is in clear need of reinforcements following a series of injuries. Cornerback Storm Duck suffered a serious knee injury during Miami’s Week 8 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed on Monday that Duck, who had already missed the previous six games due to an ankle injury, will be out for the remainder of the season. In his rookie year, the second-year cornerback recorded 35 tackles (24 solo) in 14 games, contributing two tackles and a pass breakup before being sidelined this season.

Further complicating Miami’s defensive back situation are injuries to safeties Ashtyn Davis (quad) and Ifeatu Melifonwu (hand). With these setbacks, Robinson’s knowledge of the Dolphins’ system makes him a valuable addition as the team looks to add depth.

The Dolphins (2-6) will put their revamped secondary to the test when they host the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. ET.
