Pro-union Tom Suozzi raked in campaign cash from companies with anti-union histories
**Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi’s Campaign Accepts Hundreds of Thousands from Companies Accused of Union-Busting**
WASHINGTON — Long Island Representative Tom Suozzi, who often promotes his pro-union credentials, has received nearly half a million dollars in campaign contributions from major corporations with histories of union-busting activities, financial disclosures reveal.
Since 2017, Suozzi’s (D-NY) political operation has accepted approximately $467,900 from corporate giants including Amazon, Delta Airlines, Walmart, Boeing, Google, and others that have found themselves at odds with organized labor.
In addition to these donations, Suozzi’s campaign spent $585 at Le Diplomate, a popular and upscale Washington, DC restaurant currently boycotted by numerous Democratic lawmakers due to an ongoing labor dispute.
“I’ve always been pro-union. My grandfather was in IBEW [International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers], put the lights on top of the Empire State Building. I see the American dream through the unions,” Suozzi said in August. “The problem in our country now is that people are not making enough money,” he added. “I don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on or what your politics are. That’s what we have to get back to in America. Hard work gets rewarded with a decent life.”
New York boasts the second-highest percentage of union workers in the United States, with more than 20% of the population employed through organized labor.
During his tenure in Congress, Suozzi has introduced multiple legislative efforts aimed at promoting workers’ rights. Notably, he has championed the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, designed to safeguard workers’ rights to unionize without fear of retaliation. Suozzi reintroduced the PRO Act in March of this year.
In April, Suozzi joined nearly two dozen Democratic colleagues in a letter condemning President Trump’s executive order that exempted certain federal agencies with national security responsibilities from collective bargaining.
“This action is the single most anti-worker and anti-union presidential action since Ronald Reagan fired striking air traffic controllers in 1981, and it must be reversed immediately,” Suozzi and the lawmakers stated.
Suozzi also enjoys strong backing from numerous unions, including the Long Island Federation of Labor, RWDSU Local 338, Laborers 66, Sheet Metal Workers Local 28, DC9 Painters Union, and NYSNA.
However, many of the companies contributing to Suozzi’s campaign have significant records of opposing unions. This includes $12,000 from the Delta Airlines Corporate PAC. Last year, 146 lawmakers sent a letter to Delta condemning the airline for allegedly threatening to fire employees involved in union organizing — a letter Suozzi did not sign.
The New York Democrat’s campaign also received $13,000 from UnitedHealth Group’s Corporate PAC. According to Jacobin Magazine, one of UnitedHealth’s subsidiaries deployed an anti-union team, called “the People Team,” to intimidate workers attempting to unionize.
Google’s NETPAC has contributed $8,500 to Suozzi’s campaign, despite the tech giant’s highly publicized firing of employees who led unionization efforts in 2018.
Other notable donations from companies with union-busting reputations include:
– $7,000 from Walmart’s Corporate PAC
– $1,000 from Amazon’s Corporate PAC
– $10,000 from The Kroger Company’s Corporate PAC
– $10,000 from Home Depot’s Corporate PAC
– $6,500 from MetLife Inc.’s Corporate PAC
– $19,000 from Lockheed Martin’s Corporate PAC
– $7,000 from FedEx Corporation’s Corporate PAC
– $19,500 from Boeing Company’s Corporate PAC
Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole criticized Suozzi, stating, “Two-Faced Tom Suozzi has long purported to be a friend of the unions and the working class, but his campaign coffers reveal the truth: He is a greedy, self-serving fraud. Suozzi has turned a blind eye to egregious union-busting behavior for years, all to advance his own political career and out-of-touch agenda.”
The NRCC is actively campaigning to unseat Suozzi, as his 3rd congressional district is one of the most competitive House races nationwide. The Cook Political Report currently rates the seat as leaning Democratic.
When questioned about accepting donations from companies accused of union busting, a senior adviser dismissed the claims as “a bulls–t story concocted by Washington DC Republican hacks.”
“Instead of pitching stories to the press, they should get back to Washington and work with Congressman Suozzi to prevent healthcare costs from skyrocketing and end this shutdown,” said campaign adviser Kim Devlin.
Overall, corporate contributions constitute about $1,453,450 of Suozzi’s campaign funds, according to a financial analysis obtained by The Post.
Suozzi, a co-chair of the bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus, returned to Congress in 2024, succeeding former Long Island Representative George Santos.
