### MINNESOTA at IOWA Football Game Preview

**When:** 2:30 p.m. Saturday
**Where:** Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City
**TV:** CBS
**Radio:** KFAN, 100.3 FM
**Weather:** 58 degrees, partly cloudy, 11 mph east wind
**Betting spread:** Iowa, minus-8.5
**Records:**
– Minnesota (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) upset then-No. 25 Nebraska 24-6 at home on Friday.
– Iowa (5-2, 3-1) overcame a 21-10 hole to beat Penn State 25-24 at home on Saturday night.

**History:**
Iowa has won nine of the last 10 games in the Floyd of Rosedale rivalry; the only exception was Minnesota’s 12-10 win at Kinnick Stadium in 2023. Minnesota leads the all-time series at 63-53-2.

**Stats:**
Coach P.J. Fleck is one win away from tying Glen Mason for fourth on Minnesota’s all-time list (64 wins). Fleck has a .606 winning percentage; Mason’s was .529. At Iowa, Kirk Ferentz has 209 victories and a .623 winning percentage.

**Big Question:**
If Iowa fans had their way, Minnesota’s win in Iowa City two years ago would carry an asterisk for the invalid fair catch penalty that weighed heavily in the outcome. Can the Gophers show that wasn’t a fluke by winning the rivalry game outright and in a hostile environment?

### Key Matchup: Quarterback Drake Lindsey vs. Hawkeyes Secondary

Minnesota has struggled to run the ball in every Big Ten game besides Nebraska, so it will likely come down to how many plays the redshirt freshman Lindsey can make with his right arm.

### Gophers Offense vs. Iowa Defense

Iowa’s disciplined defensive coordinator Phil Parker shut down the Gophers offense a year ago. After Minnesota led 14-7 at halftime, Iowa shut out the Gophers in a 31-14 win.

Offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh said, “They are so disciplined. They are so sound. Parker and staff do an unbelievable job preparing those guys for what they are going to see and how they will counter things.”

Minnesota’s offensive line had its best game against Nebraska, with running back Darius Taylor rushing for 148 yards on 24 carries (6.2 yards per rush). Guard Greg Johnson noted the O-line was often off on something in the opening three Big Ten games but put it all together against the Cornhuskers.

Iowa’s defense ranks 10th in the nation, allowing only 2.8 yards per carry.

A storyline out of Iowa is how former Hawkeyes—and current Gophers—cornerback John Nestor can help Minnesota with an inside scoop. Harbaugh downplays this, saying, “If you ask a player, more than likely you’re going to see it on tape. I haven’t had a ton of conversations with him. I just go through my normal procedure.”

Safety Xavier Nwankpa won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week with 10 tackles and two takeaways versus Penn State. Iowa has seven takeaways in the last four games; Minnesota has only one giveaway in the same span.

**Edge:** Iowa

### Gophers Defense vs. Iowa Offense

Look for Minnesota to pack the box to stop Iowa’s running game. Iowa ranks 34th nationally in yards per rush (5.0) but is 132nd in yards per pass (5.5). Minnesota’s rush defense ranks 20th, allowing 3.24 yards per rush.

Defensive coordinator Danny Collins said, “They play so well together as a unit. That’s where they are really dangerous.” Iowa’s offensive line has the top five Pro Football Focus grades among their players.

Minnesota recorded a program-record nine sacks against Nebraska, but Iowa is allowing only 1.29 sacks per game.

Iowa’s RB Kamari Moulton and QB Mark Gronowski are the team’s top rushers. Gronowski, a two-time national champion at the FCS level with South Dakota State, leads among quarterbacks with 10 rushing touchdowns. He suffered a knee injury earlier this year but rushed for an Iowa QB-record 130 yards against Penn State.

Collins added, “You always have to have eyes on him” in the run game. Gronowski’s offseason shoulder injury that cost him spring practices may be lingering; he has three touchdowns and four interceptions this year.

An anonymous Big Ten assistant told Athlon Sports, “They have questions…especially at receiver.” One stopgap answer in Big Ten play has been Kaden Wetjen, but he is only averaging 6.2 yards per reception.

**Edge:** Gophers

### Special Teams

The Gophers need to kick away from Wetjen, the only player in the nation this season with a punt and kickoff return for a touchdown. It has been four games since Minnesota’s kick returner Koi Perich had an explosive return.

Both kickers have made less than 76 percent of their field goals this year. A missed or made kick could be the difference.

**Edge:** Iowa

### Prediction

As usual in this rivalry, points are expected to be scarce, with an over/under of 38.5 points. This game will be an old Big Ten West slobberknocker.

**Final Score:** Iowa 20, Minnesota 17
