You’ve Got Rail: Tom Hanks Goes Incognito on the New York City Subway

Tom Hanks took a break from the Hollywood spotlight and blended in with fellow commuters on the New York City subway this week. The “Forrest Gump” star, 69, was spotted riding the 6 line through the Big Apple on Tuesday.

Dressed in a green jacket, a green knitted beanie, black jeans, and boots, Hanks kept a low profile by concealing his face behind a white protective mask. At one point during the ride, the Oscar winner reportedly dropped the bag he was clutching as he realized he had nearly missed his subway stop.

This wasn’t the first time Hanks has been seen on the subway recently. Earlier this month, the “You’ve Got Mail” star surprised bystanders aboard the Pelham Parkway train. Wearing a green Yankees cap and once again shielding his face with a medical mask, the Golden Globe winner was spotted riding the 6 line on October 7.

After exiting the train that day, Hanks grabbed a coffee from a nearby cart and took a brief moment to relax on a park bench. During this time, he generously slipped a few dollars to a street musician before heading to rehearsals for his upcoming off-Broadway play, **This World of Tomorrow**, which is set to debut at The Shed on October 30.

Based on Hanks’s 2017 book of short stories, *Uncommon Type*, the production follows scientist Bert Allenberry—played by Hanks himself—as he repeatedly travels back in time to a day at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in Queens, all in search of true love.

“To explore the themes of love and yearning, and the struggles of Today as we carry with us the eternal memories of the Past, in such a place as The Shed, strikes me as a one-of-a-kind experience not unlike the World’s Fair of 1939,” Hanks said in a statement about the play, according to Playbill.

Hollywood Legends Embrace Public Transit

Tom Hanks is not the only Hollywood icon choosing to ditch the limo for a quick $3 train ride. In April, Harrison Ford and his wife, Calista Flockhart, made headlines after riding the subway together.

The couple, married since June 2010, were seen walking through the Upper West Side before heading down to a subway station. Ford, 83, and Flockhart, 60, shared a sweet goodbye kiss as the actress rushed to catch her express downtown 2 train to her off-Broadway play, *Curse of the Starving Class*, at the Pershing Square Signature Center.

Following his wife’s lead, Ford then boarded the downtown 1 train and got off at 59th Street. During the ride, the “Star Wars” actor struck up a conversation with a woman in pink, telling the fortunate commuter that he hadn’t taken the subway in years.

It seems that even Hollywood’s biggest stars appreciate the everyday experience of riding the subway—and the relatable moments that come with it.
