Lakers make $4.2M decision on Dalton Knecht hours before 2025-26 NBA season opening night

The LA Lakers have extended sophomore Dalton Knecht’s stay beyond the 2025-26 NBA season. The Purple and Gold held a team option for Knecht’s rookie contract in the 2026-27 season, which they have now picked up, taking a $4.2 million hit on their books.
Knecht had an up-and-down rookie year. He started the season sensationally, even earning a call-up to the starting lineup. However, after losing his spot to Rui Hachimura, his confidence wavered slightly. While he managed to recover somewhat, he never fully regained his early-season form.
Dalton Knecht faced an even bigger blow when the Lakers decided to trade him for Mark Williams before the trade deadline. Although the deal was ultimately rescinded, Knecht hasn’t fully bounced back after witnessing the team’s willingness to move him. He understands it was a business decision, but it undeniably hindered his progress on the court.
Despite the setbacks, Knecht averaged 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds in 78 games, playing 19.2 minutes per contest. He shot 46.1% from the field, including an impressive 37.6% from three-point range—solid numbers for an end-of-bench rotation player.
Expectations were high for the former first-round pick entering this year, but so far, he has done little to firmly establish himself as a reliable bench contributor. His performance in the Summer League was underwhelming, averaging 10.3 points per game but shooting just 27.9% from the floor and 23.8% from deep. The preseason showed no marked improvement; despite playing the most minutes among his teammates, Knecht averaged just 8.7 points per game on 32/24/71 shooting splits. Concerns about his defensive ability remain a significant issue.
Nevertheless, the Lakers seem to be banking on Knecht as a potential asset, hoping he can rediscover his rhythm in his sophomore season. If that happens, the $4.2 million commitment would look like a steal for a potential eighth or ninth man. If not, it won’t be a difficult contract to move or waive next offseason.
Jarred Vanderbilt’s improved health has pushed Knecht lower down the pecking order among wing players. However, with LeBron James set to miss at least four weeks, Knecht has a renewed opportunity to prove himself. There will be significant minutes available, especially given LA’s lack of depth without James.
While Jarred Vanderbilt has looked solid defensively, his offensive struggles could open the door for Knecht to take playing time away, provided he performs well. Head coach JJ Redick’s offensive system relies heavily on floor spacing, which could play to Knecht’s strengths and give him a real chance to earn his coach’s trust.
Ultimately, it will be up to Dalton Knecht to maximize the opportunities ahead and show that he belongs as a dependable piece of the Lakers’ rotation.
