Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure. Developed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is India’s largest greenfield airport project, built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group in collaboration with the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
### Connectivity Boost to Ease Mumbai Airport Congestion
Designed to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), NMIA is set to become a major connectivity hub in Asia. Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted the airport’s potential to create new economic opportunities, especially for farmers in Maharashtra.
“Navi Mumbai International Airport is a project that reflects ‘Viksit Bharat’. With this new airport, farmers in Maharashtra will be connected to the markets of the Middle East and Europe,” he said.
### State-of-the-Art Features in the First Phase
The first phase of NMIA spans across 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually. This phase includes a single runway and one terminal building equipped with cutting-edge technology to enhance passenger experience.
Key technological advancements include:
– **5G Connectivity:** Ensuring fast and reliable internet access throughout the airport.
– **IoT Sensors:** For real-time monitoring and management of airport operations.
– **Automated Baggage Systems:** Streamlining luggage handling to reduce delays.
– **Contactless Processing via Digi Yatra:** Facilitating hassle-free, paperless passenger clearance.
### Fully Automated Cargo Facility
NMIA will also feature a fully automated cargo facility equipped with digital consignment tracking and climate-controlled storage areas, particularly beneficial for medicines and perishables. The airport is slated to commence commercial operations by December 2025, with ticket sales expected to start by the end of October. Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are preparing to launch flights from this new hub.
### Creating an ‘Anxiety-Free’ Airport Experience
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), which manages NMIA, described the airport’s digital features as essential to making it an “anxiety-free” experience for travelers.
“You will be able to get a message on your phone telling you, for example, that your bag is number 20 on the carousel,” he explained—demonstrating the personalized and transparent communication that reduces waiting times and enhances comfort.

The Adani Group and CIDCO plan to develop NMIA in five phases, gradually expanding its capacity and capabilities to serve as a world-class international gateway and a catalyst for regional growth.
