**Haryana IGP Y Puran Kumar Allegedly Shoots Himself at Residence in Chandigarh**
Chandigarh: Haryana Inspector General of Police (IGP) Y Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police sources, Kumar is believed to have used his service revolver to take his own life. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Chandigarh, Kanwardeep Kaur informed the media that the report of a suicide was received from House No. 116, Sector 11, around 1:30 pm. Kumar, a 2001 batch Haryana cadre IPS officer, was first discovered by his daughter in the soundproof basement of their home.
Forensic and police teams have launched a detailed investigation. Kumar’s mobile phones, along with other personal articles and documents found at the scene, have been taken into custody for further examination.
Kumar’s wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer posted as Commissioner and Secretary of the Foreign Cooperation Department in Haryana, is currently in Japan as part of a delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini. She is expected to return by Wednesday.
Just a few days prior to the incident, Kumar was transferred to the Police Training Centre in Sunaria, Rohtak. Before this, he served as IG of the Rohtak range. It is noteworthy that Kumar had recently voiced concerns regarding the promotion of certain IPS officers, which had raised eyebrows in police and administrative circles.
The sudden death of Kumar has left many shocked across the police force and government administration.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that Kumar may have obtained the revolver from a gunman before the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
