Horrifying Video: Hiker Plunges To Death For Selfie While Scaling Nama Peak In China’s Sichuan Province
**Tragic Hiking Accident on Nama Peak in Sichuan Province Claims Life of Hiker**
Beijing: A shocking incident unfolded in China’s Sichuan province, where a hiker tragically fell to his death while scaling Nama Peak. The accident occurred on September 25 and was captured on camera; the video footage surfaced last week.
The hiker, identified by his surname Hong, lost his balance and plunged nearly 200 metres down a snow-covered slope into rocky terrain. Eyewitnesses reported that Hong had untied his safety line to pose for selfies. Shortly after removing the safety line, he slipped on the slope. It was also noted that he was not carrying an ice axe during the climb.
In the viral video of the incident, Hong can be seen sliding from the edge, just before the fatal fall. Authorities were promptly alerted and rushed to the scene. Hong’s body was later recovered by the rescue team.
Reports revealed that Hong’s group had not informed local authorities about their plans to scale the 5,588-metre-high side peak of Mount Gongga. The Kangding Municipal Education and Sports Bureau accused the group of violating several safety regulations, as reported by The Sun.
An official commented on the incident, saying, “If the crampons had not been removed and the rope had not been undone, this might not have happened.”
According to the deceased’s cousin, it was Hong’s first time climbing Nama Peak. While taking pictures, Hong reportedly removed his safety line and may have stumbled over his crampons, leading to the fatal fall.
Hong was a farmer by profession and occasionally led hiking trips. However, the Sichuan Mountaineering Association clarified to News18 that he was not a professional guide.
This tragic accident highlights the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols while mountaineering, especially in challenging conditions.
