The attack underscores the persistent threat faced by security forces in Pakistan’s northwest, a region that has seen repeated strikes against police and military targets.

At least nine people were killed and four law enforcement officials were injured after a blast struck Pakistan’s Peshawar on Thursday, according to DAWN. Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed’s office confirmed the incident, adding that it specifically targeted police officials.

“Initial investigation shows that the device that caused the blast was planted on the route of a police mobile,” he was quoted as saying by DAWN.

The injured were rushed to a nearby medical facility by rescue services and remain in critical condition, according to the CCPO.

Following the explosion, security forces promptly arrived at the scene and sealed off the area. Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Masood Bangash stated that officers have initiated a detailed probe, with teams collecting evidence from the site. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether a remote-controlled device or an improvised explosive device (IED) was used in the blast.

This attack highlights the repeated threats faced by security forces in Pakistan’s northwest, a region that has experienced several assaults on police and military targets. Notably, this is not the first such incident in recent weeks.

On 30 September, a powerful explosion tore through a busy street in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, near the Frontier Corps (FC) headquarters. That blast killed at least 10 people and injured 32 others, according to local reports.

Thursday’s attack in Peshawar has once again raised alarms over the safety of security personnel and the continuing challenge of militancy in the region. Authorities have not yet released further details about who may be behind the incident, but investigations are ongoing.
