The Assam government has formally requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the recent and tragic death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, aged 52.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this development on Monday, emphasizing that invoking the treaty will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the MLAT “facilitates cooperation between the two countries in criminal investigations and proceedings.”
### Assam CM’s Statement
Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the update, writing,
“The Govt of Assam has submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg. Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities, giving us access to case details and assistance in extradition if necessary, to secure justice.”
Currently, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case.
### Investigation Efforts and Next Steps
Upon the MHA’s invocation of the treaty, a special team from Assam will be dispatched to Singapore. This team will collaborate closely with local authorities to examine case materials thoroughly and ensure that all legal procedures are meticulously followed.
This move aims to meet the growing public demand for transparency and a comprehensive investigation into Garg’s death, which has deeply affected millions of fans across Assam and the Northeast region.
### Family’s Plea for Justice
Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19 due to drowning. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has called for a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. She raised concerns about why those accompanying him on the yacht did not intervene to rescue him, especially considering his health issues and the possibility of an epileptic seizure.
“I want justice! I want a proper inquiry and answers to all our questions,” Garima told reporters following the 11th-day rituals for her husband held in Guwahati.
As the investigation continues, the Assam government remains committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the late singer and his family.
