The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighboring regions, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from Saturday through Monday. Currently, Mumbai is under an orange alert for moderate rain accompanied by light thunderstorms and winds. This alert extends to nearby districts including Palghar, Thane, and Raigad.
Meanwhile, Jalna, Beed, and Solapur are facing a red alert due to the possibility of intense rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming days.
### Weather Update: Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal
The IMD predicts moderate rainfall across most parts of Maharashtra, with isolated heavy showers expected in several areas. A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is anticipated to intensify rainfall starting Friday. According to the Maharashtra government’s Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR), the southwest monsoon is likely to continue until October 5.
### Forecast: Typhoon Ragasa’s Remnants to Merge with Bay of Bengal Depression
A new depression is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal by September 27, which will increase the intensity of rainfall. Independent weather forecaster Athreya Shetty noted that the remnants of Typhoon Ragasa will merge with this depression, resulting in heavy rains as the system moves towards Maharashtra.
For Mumbai, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Friday, upgrading it to an orange alert from Saturday to Sunday, anticipating very heavy rainfall in isolated pockets.
### Precautionary Measures: School Closure in Nanded
In response to the weather warnings, the Nanded administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Saturday. This decision comes following the issuance of an orange alert for heavy rains in the district. Additionally, Latur, Beed, and Dharashiv districts remain under a red alert due to expectations of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms.
### Relief Efforts Underway
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek financial assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to support the flood-affected districts in the state.
Congress leader Dheeraj Deshmukh has also called for a special session of the Maharashtra legislature to address the challenges faced by farmers due to the heavy rains and flooding.
Residents are advised to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
