2027 Mercedes-AMG SL Thinks More Grille Is the Answer

admin By admin 2025 年 11 月 16 日

Mercedes is set to make a big statement with its grilles over the next few years—and by big, we really mean big. This trend is clear from the reveal of the new GLC EV, an image teasing the upcoming C-Class EV, and the recent Vision Iconic concept. Now, designers have been tasked with applying this bold grille design philosophy to the brand’s existing lineup, including the SL.

The current SL still looks great in our opinion, but since it debuted in October 2021, it’s due for a refresh—especially considering its Porsche 911 rival was updated relatively recently. Similar to the transition from the Porsche 992.1 to 992.2, only dedicated fans may immediately notice the difference between the old and new SL models. However, the updated grille design certainly caught our attention.

While it’s not as enormous as the jumbo grilles on the GLC EQ models or the Vision Iconic concept, and not as large as the grille on the SL’s GT coupe sibling, the new SL grille is noticeably deeper. The bottom section now extends behind the license plate rather than stopping just above it. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this grille feature plenty of illumination, making the car instantly recognizable at night.

Enlarging the grille also means reshaping the entire bumper assembly. The new design of the side air intakes is currently concealed behind camouflage on these prototypes. The headlights appear unchanged for now but are expected to showcase new daytime running light (DRL) graphics when the MY27 SL hits the road next year. The rear of the car will also receive updates.

### Interior Updates

What about the interior? We half expected Mercedes-AMG to update the dashboard with the pillar-to-pillar digital setup found in models like the new CLA and GLC. However, glimpses of the dash through these test cars’ windows confirm that the existing center-mounted tablet display remains in place.

### Powertrain Details

According to the fender badges on this pair of SL63 prototypes, the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine is still present. We’re sure AMG engineers will have extracted a bit more power from it. For reference, the current SL63 produces 577 hp (585 PS), while the less highly tuned SL55 delivers 470 hp (477 PS).

Other available engines include a 416 hp (422 PS) 2.0-liter inline-four in the SL43 and an impressive 805 hp (816 PS) hybrid V8 found in the SL 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid. Mercedes also offers the SL in Maybach trim, which pairs the SL63’s motor with a softer suspension setup for added comfort.

Overall, the upcoming SL refresh promises subtle but significant design and performance enhancements, keeping it competitive in the luxury sports car segment.
